Date: Wed, 08 May 2002 15:01:25 -0500
On Sunday, May 5, 2002 the 100th year birthday party was held atHeartland
Health Care, Paxton, Illinois for Clara Joergens.
Ms. Joergens was born May 3, 1902 in Lucas Township, Dieterich,Effingham
County, a daughter of Rudolph and Anna Schwengel Joergens.
Her father, who was a carpenter, died when Clara was 12 weeks old, leaving
her mother to raise Clara, Walter (6), Martha (4) and Hilda (2).
Clara attended school to the seventh grade, at which time she beganworking
to help her mother. They hung wallpaper, pieced quilts and quilted for
neighbors. Clara learned other handcrafts as well.
At the age of 17, she moved to Peoria as a domestic, and did suchthings as
clean, cook and care for children. She continued in this line of workin
Kankakee and Evanston, having been employed by a doctor, a lawyer anda
judge. She would return to Dieterich to help her mother and brotherwith
fieldwork and harvesting.
Ms. Joergens was also a cook in the bakery department of Evanston High
School where she was employed for many years. She attibutes herlongevity
to work, and plenty of it. Which she has never been reluctant to face.
In 1983 Clara and her sister, Hilda moved to Onarga and shared a homewith
their other sister, Martha Seggebruch. After both sisters passed away,
Clara continued to live alone until 1992 when she moved to Heartland.
She was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Evanston, belonging
to various church organizations.
Ms. Joergens has three nieces, Joyce Pool, LaWanda Schutte and JeanieWenter
and one nephew, Eldon Joergens.
Attending the party were Dale and Joyce Pool, Jerry, Barb and JakeNims and
Jill Rieches of Onarga; Tricia Johnson of Chenoa; Gary, Sherrie, Markand
Scott Dietz of Gilman; Lauren Baier, LaWanda Schuette and MikeSchuette of
Cisna Park; Doug and Kathy Millage of Champaign; Brad, Angie, Allisonand
Kristen Schuette of Atlanta, Illinois; Eldon and Judy Joergens andLeroy and
Jeanie Wente of Effingham; Marc, Anne, Sara, and Nicole Joergens,Columbia;
and Tom Karla, Kaylee and Cole Breitenbucher of Bourbonnaise.
I personally see Ms. Joergens several times a week and am amazed ather
mental capabilities. She uses a walker to go any distance, but arisesearly
every morning to bath and dress herself down to putting on earrings. She
spends a good deal of her day crocheting, and has recently completedan
afghan for a Heartland employee's son. It was beautiful; grannysquares of
purple and light blue yarn. She says she has to keep busy, but herlegs
won't allow her to do anything other than crochet. She subscribes toand
reads the daily newspaper. And she always has a smile to great me and
others.
Her room is decorated with pictures of her friends and family
